Colin Dunn (Director)

Colin Dunn is registered nurse in both the mental health and intellectual disability areas. He has been employed by both and Cardiff and the Vale NHS Trust as a nurse, and latterly a behavioural specialist by Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust as part of a specialist community based team. Colin has specialised in the fields of challenging behaviour and managing violence and aggression for over 20 years.

During his period of employment with the trusts he has gained vast experience in subjects surrounding the prevention and management of challenging behaviour and violence and aggression. Some examples of his work are as follows:-

 

Individual client behavioural assessments  
Support staff training in both positive support and reactive strategies  
Environmental advise on ‘purpose’ built areas for this client group  
Construction of positive behavioural support plans for individuals  
Support staff team building and working consistently  
Monitoring physical interventions and post incident support for support staff  

 

Whilst employed by Cardiff and the Vale NHS Trust he was invited to produce a non-pain compliant form of physical intervention training. This led to the production of ‘Preventing and Responding to Aggressive Behaviour’ a training package devised for Cardiff and the Vale Trust in 1997. This package was part of the Intensive Support Service (formally the Challenging behaviour Service) that received a national training award in 1997.He was also external co-ordinator for physical intervention training throughout England and Wales.

During his employment with Cardiff and the Vale NHS Trust he had close links with the British Institute of Learning disabilities (BILD).

Colin is referenced and acknowledged in several publications, these include Challenging Behaviour: a Policy Framework, and Ethical Approaches to Physical Interventions: Responding to Challenging Behaviour in People with Intellectual Disabilities

Colin also provided advice towards the development of ‘Code of Practice for Trainers in the field of Physical Interventions’ (BILD Publication).

He also has a vast Knowledge and experience in a number of alternative forms of physical intervention training.
