Least Intrusive Physical Intervention Training
Specialist Services Training Solutions interventions are based on a Gradient of Response and Control (see below) when implementing physical interventions. This is in line with ‘reasonable force’ and least restrictive non-pain compliance approaches, in order to protect support staff, carers and service users.
Gradient Of Response And Control
"Reasonable force is not what the victim felt was reasonable in the heat of the moment, but what they would have considered reasonable had they had time for contemplation, the force used should be that necessary to restrain the aggressor and no more. The level of force considered reasonable will vary in the circumstances, depending on the characteristics of the assailant, the degree of force being used and the possibility of dealing with the incident in other ways." Rowlett & Breakwell (1992)
"Any restraint must be 'reasonable in the circumstance'. It must be the minimum necessary to deal with the harm that needs to be prevented"
