Least Intrusive Physical Intervention Training

‘The Therapeutic prevention and management of Violence and Aggression’

Specialist Services Training Solutions interventions are based on a Gradient of Response and Control (see below) when implementing physical interventions. This is in line with ‘reasonable force’ and least restrictive non-pain compliance approaches, in order to protect support staff, carers and service users.

2 & 4 Day courses to include:

2 day workshops - 1 Day theoretical presentation covering topics including; Primary Prevention, Gradient of Response and Control, Personal Risk factors and Physical Interventions and the Law. This theory day is linked to practical skills in physical interventions, leading into a 1 day non-pain based ‘Break and Escape’ workshop.

1 Day theoretical presentation as above, linked to practical skills in physical interventions and 3 days practical skills training. With emphasis on a Gradient of Response and Control and non-pain based 'break and escape' techniques, escorting and safe holding.

1-4 day specific courses may be negotiated with customers in order to meet their individual requirements

Gradient Of Response And Control

"Reasonable force is not what the victim felt was reasonable in the heat of the moment, but what they would have considered reasonable had they had time for contemplation, the force used should be that necessary to restrain the aggressor and no more. The level of force considered reasonable will vary in the circumstances, depending on the characteristics of the assailant, the degree of force being used and the possibility of dealing with the incident in other ways."

Rowlett & Breakwell (1992)

"Any restraint must be 'reasonable in the circumstance'. It must be the minimum necessary to deal with the harm that needs to be prevented"

Mental Health Act 1983 Code of practice paragraph 18.11
